Tanagra. Kouros (young man). 50cm This piece, that we present today, is a Tanagra of the Kouros (young man). The Greek terracotta called "Tanagra" are polychromed ceramic figures of smaller size, which were very valuable objects in the Greek world of the late fourth century BC to the end of the third century before Christ. The Tanagra were also used as grave goods in the temple and as decorating in the houses. Kouros (young man) is the modern name for the statue of a young man in Greek art of the Archaic period. The scheme of the generally unclothed Kouros was in the whole Greek culture space spread and and known before the 8th century BC. The 40 cm high figure of "Kouros of Palekastro", which was found in 1987 in Crete, proves that the scheme was used before the Mycenaeans conquest of the island and thus before the Dark Ages.
