Sculpture. Torso of Belvedere. 71x82x150cm

Of the male nude by the Athenian sculptor Apollonius, only one fragment remained intact, a piece dating from the 1st century BC, but it is thought to be a copy of an original probably dating from the 2nd century BC.

The statue was discovered in its present state in the Campo de 'Fiori (Field of Flowers) under Pope Julius II (1503-1513). This statue probably depicted a man mounted on an animal, the pose of the torso with its extraordinarily well-represented musculature had a great influence on later artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael Sanzio of the Renaissance, and other artists of Mannerism and the Baroque.
