This month we have a beautiful piece of a Discobolus.

The Discobolus is an sculpture realized by Greek founder Eleutheras Myron around the year 455 before Christ, it is one of the most famous Greek statues par excellence, which represents an athlete in the instant just before to throw a disc. It belongs to the classical period.

Carved wood. 75x27x15   Today we present one of our proudest works, it is an unique piece, carved in wood entirely by hand, in the piece have worked excellent craftsmen for many hours and have given it an excellent patina of gold and tempera. The figure represents the Mother of God with Child Jesus, it measures 75cm and has incredible details. The Mother of God holds her son in her left arm and in her right hand an apple. Engraved on the fruit is a cross-section of a star with five peaks, the Greek symbol of wisdom. In the Garden of Eden there is a tree: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Wisdom therefore symbolises both connotations in the apple. The depiction of the Virgin and Child in this way leads us to the idea of the wisdom of the Son of God.

The painting "Between hope and fear" by Alma-Tadema   Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema born in Netherlands in 1836 and died in 1912. Sir Alma-Tadema was a Dutch Neoclassical painter of the Victorian era formed in Belgium and established in England since 1870. He is known for its sumptuous paintings inspired in the ancient world. A painter of classical subject, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. Though admired during his lifetime for his citizenship and his depictions of Classical antiquity, his work fell into disrepute after his death, and only since the 1960s it has been re-evaluated for its importance within nineteenth-century English art.   Here you can get the canvases of Alma-Tadema.
