The famous Rosetta Stone, which was a key element to deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics, was casually found in north Egypt by a French military detachment. The Rosetta Stone is a fragment of an ancient Egyptian granodiorite stele inscribed with a decree issued at Memphis in 196 BC on behalf of the Pharaoh Ptolemy V. The decree appears in three different scripts: the upper text in Egyptian hieroglyphs, the middle part in demotic text and in the lower in ancient Greek. Thanks to that he presents essentially the same content in the three inscriptions, with minor differences between them, this stone provided the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs.
