Sculpture of the Diana of Gabies. Height: 164cm

Sculpture of the Diana of Gabies. Height: 164cm

According to recent studies it looks like that this figure of Artemis, popularly known as Diana of Gabies or Gabios, is a copy of an original by Praxiteles, created around the year 330 before Christus. Artemis, goddess of the hunt is often represented, like in this case, with a short tunic, which in this sculpture appears covered by another very specific robe named diplax, which was usually offered to the goddess by future wives and mothers. The sculpture, was discovered in 1792 in Gabies and belonged to the Borghese Collection, until the year 1807 in which it was acquired by Napoleon and wherein was converted to a part of the Louvre collections.
