Olmec head. 86x69x113cm

We present a life-size replica of an Olmec head statue. This statue is a relic of the Olmec culture, a culture of Central American origin. It is a truly impressive work of a colossal head with a helmet or cap.
The Olmec were the first "important" civilisation in Mexico after a progressive development in Soconusco. They lived in the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico, in the present-day states of Veracruz and Tabasco. It has been speculated that the Olmec derived in part from the neighbouring Mokaya and/or Mixe-Zoquean.
The first Olmec centre, San Lorenzo, was virtually abandoned around 900 BC, around the same time that La Venta came to prominence. Around 950 BC there was also massive destruction of many monuments at San Lorenzo, which may indicate an internal uprising or, less likely, an invasion. However, the latest thinking is that environmental changes may have been responsible for this displacement of Olmec centres, as some major rivers changed course.
