Works of the classical Civilizations

At the Gate of the Garden. Canvas by Godward (1861-1922)

Godward was a Victorian Neo-classicist, and therefore a follower of the works of Frederic Leighton, who focused on historical, biblical and classical themes. His works is closer stylistically to Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, who is known for its sumptuous pictures inspired in the ancient world and with whom he shared the taste for the interpretation of classical architecture, in particular, remains of buildings built in marble.

The majority of the existing paintings of Godward shows women with classical dresses, posed against the mentioned landscapes, although is also include some representations semi-nude and fully nude in his works (A notable example is "The Tepidarium" (1913 ), which shares its title with a polemic painting of Alma-Tadema of the same thematic, which resides in the Lady Lever Art Gallery).

The titles of the works of Godward reflect the source of his inspiration: "The classical civilizations", notably more the Ancient Rome, which connects Godward closely with Alma-Tadema, and in occasions the Ancient Greece which connects him artistically, but in a degree more limited with Frederic Leighton.
